who am i kidding?

Recently finished “Smashed: Story of a Drunken Girlhood” by Koren Zailkas. I consider it a must-read for any girl who has ever had any relationship with alcohol. It chronicles one girl’s journey to ‘responsible drinking’ from her first drink at age fourteen to her later realization that she is severely abusing alcohol. This book is honest and doesn’t advocate complete abstinence. That is why it’s good.

The author does a brilliant job of giving the tired old phrase “responsible drinking” new meaning and directives. Zailkas suggests understanding why you drink as well as how your drinking affects your relationships.

Below are some of my favorite lines from the book…

“… I cry harder because my private pains are so unoriginal.”

“One night I’ll come home and rip the Mariah Carey calendar off the bulletin board for no reason other than I’ve decided that somebody needs to do it.”

“I will never get over the feeling that there is too much pressure to feel affectionate in formal attire, or in a restaurant with courses, or in proximity to candlesticks or flowers. It will always be nearly impossible for me to feel affinity for someone unless we’re both wearing unwashed jeans and unwashed hair, unless we’re eating dinner at the corner diner, by the glow of the neon-blue aquarium light.”

“I think the world as I know it is a massive web of feminine guilt. We all mourn and make up for not just our own catastrophes, but also everyone else’s.”

“I’ve never trusted the validity of my feelings.”

“I like picking up a roll of developed film at the corner photo lab and discovering that the world inside the film confirms that, for a few brief moments, the world was as handsome as I thought it was.”

no matter what happens.
no matter how long we go without being together.
no matter how many fights we get in - all we need is a kiss & suddenly we remember

why we love each other so much
